Sustainability in Commercial Fit-Outs: Reducing Waste and Carbon

Written by The Bluum Team
Making the right things last. Sustainable as standard.

Picture a fit-out project as a second chance for an entire floor. Old carpet tiles at your feet, stacks of redundant chairs against the wall, and over it all, the weighty question: Where does it all go when the makeover starts?

At Bluum, we believe that a fit-out should never mean a skip full of waste. Every piece reused, every material sourced consciously, is part of a bigger story - a story about caring for the world you work in.

“We don’t believe in waste of materials, time, or potential. We do things differently.” - Dan Keith, Co-founder

Facing the Waste: An Industry Reckoning

Did you know? Office fit-outs alone can generate tons of rubbish, much of it perfectly reusable. When space needs evolve, too often the toolkit is demolition, not transformation. It’s easier to rip it all out – but that’s not our way.

“It’s shocking how much gets ripped out and thrown away. We try to reuse what’s there -carpets, partitioning, lighting – wherever we can.” – Neil Corbin, Project Manager

One client’s move left a pile of still-serviceable boards and frames. We reworked them into new breakout spaces – and sent surplus carpet to a local housing project, turning waste into welcome mats for another community.

Our Kind of Sustainability: Practical and Real

What does real sustainability look like?

  • Giving a second life to fixtures, fittings, and mechanical kit already installed
  • Choosing British-made, low-impact materials wherever possible – FSC-certified timber, recycled steel, responsible finishes
  • Reworking furniture to “good as new”, avoiding unnecessary replacements
  • Designing so spaces can easily flex again tomorrow, instead of needing another full strip-out

A Future-Proof Approach

Zero to landfill isn’t just a nice idea – it’s policy here. Local contractors mean fewer van miles. Smart systems make sure spaces are cosy without wasting energy. Every detail matters.

“Budgets are tight, so we focus on practical, efficient solutions that make a real difference – for your business and the planet.” – Neil Corbin, Project Manager

Clients who value a greener approach get more than compliance – they get spaces that attract talent, lower costs, and hold their worth in a changing world.

Let’s build spaces that last. Not just until the next refit, but for business, people, and planet. At Bluum, it’s not sustainability on the side. It’s the way we work, every day.

“Sometimes it costs more to reuse, but it’s the right thing to do. We’ve sent old carpet to social housing projects - it’s about making a difference where we can.”
