Westminster University Faith Space
Designing sacred space requires understanding that goes beyond building codes. We created two large prayer rooms that accommodate different worship practices, luxury ablution areas that respect ritual requirements, and a contemplation space where students of any faith—or none—can find quiet respite.
The area allocated for the new facility was a neglected windowless basement area, so the challenge was how to introduce a feeling of light and fresh air into the space. An illusion of daylight was produced by installing light boxes with printed fabric coverings to mimic real windows and a brand new HVAC system was installed throughout requiring extensive work to run ducts and pipework.
The corridor connecting these spaces was completely reimagined to create a sense of journey from the bustling campus above to the tranquil sanctuary below. Delivered despite exam-season constraints and complex site conditions, earning genuine praise from stakeholders who understand how rare it is to get every detail right.
