Why clients keep coming back to Bluum

Written by The Bluum Team
A great office fit-out should be the beginning of a relationship, not the end of one. At Bluum, roughly half our work comes from clients who have worked with us before, some continuously, others who come back years later when they are ready to move again. Co-founder Dan Keith sat down to explain what that looks like in practice.

It starts before the project does

Winning a client’s trust does not begin with a slick presentation. It begins with listening.

“Under no circumstances do you get your phone out when you’re in a room with a client. Make notes. It shows them you’re listening.” – Bart Bergandy, Co-founder

Rather than leading a pitch with the Bluum story, Dan and co-founder Bart lead with the client’s project: what they have understood, what they would do, how they would get there. The conversation is about the client first. That approach, straightforward as it sounds, sets the tone for everything that follows.

A partner through the whole process

Bluum’s approach is consultative from day one. We appreciate that our clients have day jobs. Whether we are working with a CEO or an Office Manager, they rarely have the time or the headspace to get heavily involved in a fit-out. We always tell clients that their level of involvement is entirely up to them. We want the process to be enjoyable, not stressful.

"There are no egos. It's their workplace, not ours. We're not out to win design awards for ourselves. We want to create the best possible place for them to work."

- Dan Keith, Co-founder

A tidy site is a safe site. Bluum keeps sites immaculate throughout because that is the right way to run a project, full stop. If a client turns up unannounced, it looks exactly the same as it always does.

Getting the details right, all of them

The final stretch of a fit-out is where many projects fall short. At Bluum, the snagging process starts internally, long before the client walks around.

“The Site Manager is constantly monitoring quality throughout. The Project Manager then produces and internally issues a snagging list before the client even has a chance to snag the job. If a client finds a snag, I can almost guarantee it’s already on our radar.” – Dan Keith, Co-founder

That attention to detail is not just about the finish. It is about the client feeling, at every stage, that things are being managed properly so they can focus on running their business rather than overseeing a building site.

Honesty builds longer relationships than a perfect pitch

One of Bluum’s longest-standing clients came back for a £350k project after Dan had significantly mispriced a previous job. Rather than deflect or minimise it, he went back with his hands up.

“I said I’d messed up. He paid it, was fine with it, and then brought us back without putting it out to competition.” – Dan Keith, Co-founder

That kind of trust takes time to build and is easy to lose. It is why Bluum does not over-promise, does not inflate margins, and does not treat a client relationship as a transaction to be closed and moved on from.

Why clients keep coming back

With clients like Pinsent Masons, what started as a large flooring contract has since grown into multiple projects across multiple years. For others, it is a call three years later when they are ready to move again.

“The simplicity of dealing with us. The way we react quickly, do what we say we’re going to do. They don’t need to keep chasing us.” – Dan Keith, Co-founder

That is what a genuine partnership looks like. Not a one-off transaction, but a relationship that lasts the length of a lease and beyond.

Bluum designs and builds bespoke office fit-outs across London. If you are thinking about your next move, we would love to talk.
